MOVIE NAME, WHEN WATCHED, MY RATING

|
TO WATCH:
Any suggestions?
|
| A Tale of Two
Cities |
Great portrayal of the French Revolution |
| Hannibal Rising,
October, 2008 |
Not as scary as the other ones but pretty well
done, more or less fits in with the rest of the series and helps to
explain them. But explaining it makes it less scary. |
| 10,000 BC,
October, 2008 |
A beautiful journey, great special effects
recreating the ancient world. History, accuracy, plausibility? what
are those? |
| Edward Scissorhands,
September 2008 |
Quirky in a good way. Minimalist sets,
faked acting but it's intentional to show how fake people are in their
mobthink. |
| Mice and Men,
September 2008 |
Lives up to the book-- pretty good.
Music by Copland: disappointing. |
| The Notebook,
September 2008 |
Cheesy love story but original bit at the end
when they die together. |
| Goodfellas,
August 2008 |
The matter-of-factness with which the story is
told is what makes it great. |
| The Fountainhead,
August 2008 |
Rand's philosophy is brilliant and ruthlessly
logical. Some of the assumptions she makes for her logic are her
fatal flaw: for example, her rejection of the basic human need for
community. The movie is a pretty good representation of her ideology
and clear cut style |
| Millennium,
August 2008 |
Idiotic story (going back in time to get
undiseased people who were gonna die anyway in plane crashes to save
humanity), bad action (cliched special effects), bad acting, bad
special effects, bad dialogue. Blech. |
| Ayn Rand: A Sense
of Life, August 2008 |
Interesting
footage and a good way to learn about that freak, but not for the naive
and impressionable. This is unbalanced-- a very hagiographic
autobiography. |
| Bang, August 2008 |
How wearing a
uniform affects the way the world sees you... More than just explicit sex
and violence but not much more. |
| The Lover, August
2008 |
Boring soft-core
porno... story has potential-- forbidden love, exotic colonial Vietnam
setting.... but not well executed |
| Semi-Pro, August
2008 |
Not Will Ferrel's
best... occasional scenes will mack you chuckle but overall pretty lame. |
| Hostel, August
2008 |
Not that scary
and scary part had little to do with the hostel, but scenes of backpacking
were fun. |
| No Country for
Old Men, August 2008 |
Modern Western:
cowboy sheriff with existential issues (Tommy Lee Jones), a creepy
murderer with a pressurized air tank instead of a Gun, and a hero who is a
white trash thief and is trying to get away. Interesting,
suspenseful, but not great. |
| Accidental
Tourist, June 2008 |
Weird Romance...
a dry businessman and a freaky single mom. Very 80's |
| Love Comes
Lately, July 2008 |
SF Jewish Film
Festival. Slow moving quirky profile of a really old man who is a
dawg |
| Untraceable, July
2008 |
Creepy but not
scary movie about cyber murders. Most interesting point is the
public's hunger for blood and gore even if it's real. Set in cloudy
grey Portland, OR of all places. |
| Red River, June 2008 |
John Wayne acts a lot like GW Bush in this
one.... stay the course, with us or against us. Classic Cowboy
film |
| Conspiracy, June 2008 |
Creepy, but somehow believable. The
presentation and marketing of this as a thriller or as an entertaining
film with actors you'll wanna see, etc.... shows a lack of understanding
of the subject that ultimately allowed the holocaust to happen. |
| THX-1138,
May 2008 |
How many times can we have this theme of an
extreme oppressive totalitarian dystopia? 1984, A Brave New World,
Farenheit 451, etc.... but it's an important theme. Some of the
imagery in this film is unforgettable even though the main premise is
not original. |
| Out of the Ashes,
May 2008 |
Adds element of American doubt and callousness
to Holocaust story. Accents are overdone to the point of
distastefulness. Lahti is a poor choice for this-- she acted
decently but her face is to recognizable for a true story Holocaust
film. |
| Sullivan's Travels,
May 2008 |
Juxtaposes comedy and seriousness very well |
| A Night in Casablanca,
May 2008 |
The Marx Brothers are great. The mute
guy trying to relay a message was hilarious. |
| The Freshman,
May 2008 |
Brando laughs at self in this silly Mafia
comedy. |
North by Northwest,
May 2008 |
Classic thriller about survival. I'm sure it's
just the different era talking, but Cary Grant seems naivly chivalrous
yet shrewd and brave at the same time. Great snappy dialogue
typical for 1950's. Great story full of unexpected twists (except
the falling in love part) Prairie airplane scene and Mt Rushmore
scene were great. |
Dangerous Beauty,
May 2008 |
One could take the cynical view and see this
film for what it is: cliched story, cliched music, cliched beauty,
cliched chivalry... or one could surrender to the romance and swim in
melted cheese. Courtesans of Venice = (Geishas in Japan) =
refined prostitutes who have to bury their love. |
Perfume, May 2008
 |
Starts off well with some masterful sequences
relating sense of smell and story. Some of the scenes relating
talent could have been done more convincingly. But after the half-way
point goes down-hill and turns into an ugly horror thriller with a twist
of twisted but vaguely beautiful logic. The last sequence, however
obliterates that last bit of comprehensability or believability... which
not necessarily ruins the movie-- it is a surprise ending rather than
cliche, which is preferable even if it is so bizzare. |
Secretary, May 2008
 |
At once disturbing, funny, sexy, endearing,
beautiful. Maggie Gyllenhall is a demure goddess; her counterpart
James Spader is a bit less convincing but also gives a unique and
possessed performance. |
Baraka, May 2008
 |
Virtually identical to Koyanisqatsi, but
without the mesmerising sound track, and several years later.
Baraka does, however, include more of a focus on individual humans and
film stunning landscapes and human rituals. |
Memoirs of a Geisha, May 2008
 |
Lots of incredible beauties and a glimpse into
a beautiful world. But story is lame and drags on too long. Zizi
is a gem. |
Zoolander, May 2008
 |
What can I say... I actually laughed and was
not completely bored by this film. I was entertained.
Sometimes that's all you need from a film. But with this subject
matter I actually felt embarassed to be watching it. |
Jumper, May 2008
 |
For a simple adolescent action movie, it was
entertaining and fun. Liked the scenes at the pyramids and rome,
the special effects convey the concept really well. |
Heat, April 2008
 |
Regular crime action movie...other than a few
moments of brilliance from Al Pacino (when he loses his temper) this
film has very little to offer. A typical cat &
mouse. |
Halloween, April 2008
 |
Just as disturbing than the actual images in
these horror films is the amount and popularity of them. People
who like these kinds of films are fulfilling their voyeuristic thirst
for blood and evil. It's one thing if horror is done artfully and
with cleverness like Hitchcock or The Ring, but this one was hardly even
scary. |
Into the Wild, April 2008
 |
Great true story, some of the effects are a
little weird... probably intentional: it's hard to sympathize with the
selfish main character when he dies, but you do feel sorry for him. |
They Live, April 2008
 |
Are all action movies from the late 80's this
terrible? Catch lines that make you want to vomit out of your ears
after hearing them. Unconvincing, pointless action scenes.
Unoriginal story... aliens take over with the use of technology
subliminally controlling humanity. Again. Kinda like the Matrix, but at
least Matrix had good acting and amazing action... |
August Rush, April 2008
 |
Kinda moving, but whoever made this thing
didn't know much about music. Very cheesy. |
Live from the Met in HD: La Boheme, April 2008
 |
See my big review at: Broadstreetreview.com |
American Gangster, March 2008
 |
Heart-pumping crime "history movie" Denzel is
great, as is Crow, and when they finally come together at the end, they
seem like old friends. After slow start, great flow and especially
powerful when it shows the effects of the crimes on the junkies.
Also powerful scene at the end where justice reigns while the church
sings- very Godfather. |
Knocked Up, March 2008
 |
Genuinely funny and entertaining except for
the new "macheesemo" that has replaced "machismo." Outside of baby
parody story line, a great critique of fake Southern Cali stereotypical
culture. |
National Treasure: Book of Secrets, February
2008 |
Sequels are supposed to be similar to the
prequels but this one literally follows almost the exact same jokes,
formula, with some historical monuments substituted for others.
The first one was better. |
Syriana, February 2008
 |
Greedy corruption and aggrandizement in the
usual places: CIA, Dept. of Justice, Congressional business regulators,
Arab Emirate Oil Controllers, of course Corporate Oil. And only
the terrorists are made to look like they are the victims and therefore
join the evil party. With so many evil parties, the movie ends up
being hardly intelligible and Clooney & Damon hardly get any screen
time, with of course no time for any character development either.
Even the quiet black investigator ends up being a backstabber of his the
evil boss he's supposed to be working for. |
Elizabethtown, February 2008
 |
Orlando Bloom is a little twirp... seriously,
what is attractive? Kristen Dunst is annoying. "Look! I am speshul.
I am unique. I am a free spirit!" BS. I used to like
that actress. Some good scenes, though. The surreal
workplace and the suicide plans. The Kentukey family. The
Road Trip at the end. Ends up being a decent movie despite dumb
ass actors. |
Bucket List, February 2008
 |
Dialogue is contrived, message is cliche. I
just wanted to see where they'd end up going |
National Treasure, February 2008
 |
Clever Adventure that weaves in and out of
History... gotta love those. Especially when it involves the
Masons, B Franklin and Philly |
Pursuit of Happyness, February 2008
 |
Smith's best performance so far. True
story about a man who managed a job, a non-paying internship, raising a
son, getting evicted and broke, left by his wife... and beat it all to
become a Millionaire. Smart words about PURSUIT of Happiness...
but never finding it? |
Anchorman, February 2008
 |
|
Rocky Balboa, February 2008
 |
Yet ANOTHER Rocky movie, again he does the
improbable. |
Salah Shabatti, February 2008
 |
|
3:10 to Yuma, February 2008
 |
|
December Boys, January 2008
 |
Harry Potter actor as an orphan on the beach
in Australia, a film about coming of age and friendship. OK but
not particularly memorable |
Beaufort, January 2008
 |
Israel's entry into the Oscars with a very
dark brooding war film. Realistic because for a very long time,
not much happens, and the action is very sudden, intense, but
short-lived. Interesting, but not gripping from a cinematic point
of view. |
Walking on Water, January 2008
 |
An Israeli version of a Munich like
character, with an added dimension of third-generation Germans in
Israeli, under the Holocaust's shadow. Yet another added dimension with
homosexuality. Almost tries to do too much, but still a very good
film. Nice to see Israel scenic pictures. |
Syrian Bride, January 2008
 |
Israeli film about ridiculousness of
bureaucracy and how it directly affects personal lives. Also a
revealing look into neighboring cultures. Well acted, and vibrant
pictures. Un-Hollywoodness of Israeli films is great, along with
moments of local humor. |
Cinderella Man, January 2008
 |
Yet another underdog boxing movie. This
one doesn't have much new to add, except that it's set in the great
depression. Russel Crow doesn't come close to portraying a man
exceptionally determined and brave. His small stature also doesn't seem
credible in the ring. Rocky is much better. |
Message in a Bottle, January 2008
|
Heartbreaking, but Kostner doesn't really
convey the love and depth of soul that the letters convey. The
girl is annoying but sweet. The little boy, I wanted to
choke. The father was good. Would have loved to see better
photography of the beauty of the N. Carolina coast. |
Mr. Bean's Holiday, January 2008
|
Hilarious, but only in small scenes.
Watching this idiot make an ass for more than ten minutes very quickly
goes from funny to annoying to sad. |
Frisco Kid, January 2008
 |
A must see for every Jew! The right blend of
comedy, action, and meaning. Even funnier if you know the inside
jokes. |
Click, December
2007 |
Adam Sandler with his usual semi-funny goofy
stupidity in the begining but then gets much better, and does something
in the shadow of It's A Wonderful Life |
Little Big Man, , December
2007 |
The Epitome of irony right from its
title. Juxtaposes humor with tragedy, stupidity with wisdom.
Not your usual western by a long shot. |
Psycho (Old version), December
2007 |
Not only is Bernard Herrmann's score
brilliant, it is also dispatched with ferocious passion by the
orchestra- extremely rare in film scores! Hitchcock's mastery of
suspense is not as scary the second time around but the final scene
still gave me the chills. |
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, December
2007 |
As "gold-diggger Loreli", Monroe
exceeds her stupidity level in this one... just annoying. Then she
says she's playing stupid because she thinks that's what men like.
I don't buy it... she's still stupid because all she cares for is money
and diamonds. She glows though. Songs are pretty
boring. Dialogue has old-style cleverness |
A Hard Day's Night, December
2007 |
Following around the carefree Beatles.
One gets envious of their ease and popularity... seems disingenuous, or
maybe it's their way-of-life genius. The movie has not plot
though. Fun / interesting to watch legends play and sing and talk
and live. But gets boring when pointless with no real plot. |
Stevie (2002), December 2007
 |
Documentary about a true, absolutely real
life convict with a messed up life. A life wasted and destroyed by
the self and by his dysfunctional family. Once again, the
importance of family. And the shock of poor people in a the U S of
A. Bona-fide HICKS. A family of obese women with names like Brenda,
Bernice, and Berna around fatty little Stevie. Quite sad. |
Sweet Sixteen (2002), December
2007 |
I had to put the subtitles on because the
Scottish pronunciation might as well be German or Swedish to me-- that
is to say... I'll understand 1 word out of 8 or 9. Hormonal
teenager drops out of school and screws up. Hard to believe the
recklessness and callousness of his mum. Bleak life in a
1st-world country. Makes you appreciate what you have. |
Oh Brother Where Art Thou, December
2007 |
Loosely based on the Odyssey, set in the
Mississippi in the great depression. You feel for and love the
characters-- rare in a comedy. Great foot-tappin ol timee music! |
Death in Gaza, December
2007 |
Grim, and fairly well-balanced account.
The filmmaker's death is partly his own fault: approaching an APC in the
middle of the night and ignoring gunshots? |
Mr. Holland's Opus, December
2007 |
Cheeese. "Play the sunset"
Instantly the student's technique problems are solved. Somewhat
inspiring and heartwarming if you're open to it. |
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), December
2007 |
Very gory. Hot bods. Middle of nowhere
crazy hicks. That's about it. |
Bourne Ultimatum, December
2007 |
Non-stop action, but even high speed urban
car chases get boring after the third or fourth time around. Some
ol' govt' against lil' man story. Matt Damon's stunt men deserve
more credit than he does, but he does a good job of portraying vacuousness
of a man lost. |
Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy, December
2007 |
One of the stupidest most random, unamusing
films I've ever watched. Shallow aimless. |
Bowling for Columbine, December
2007 |
Michael Moore makes the surprising conclusion
that not only guns, but mostly media sensationalism and Americans'
extreme fearfulness, along with injustice with the poor, that causes
violence. A interesting but disorganized and crazy movie.
Always funny to see execs put in uncomfortable situations though. |
The Incredible Lightness of Being, December
2007 |
"You (Don Giovanni Doctor) are so
strong... you take life lightly. I am weak, I take life
heavily. So I am going back to the land of the weak [Soviet
Occupied] Prague" The find happiness and he appeases his
restlessness on a farm. |
The Philadelphia Story, December 2007
 |
Very clever dialogue and expressive
acing. Old movie that feels a lot more like a play than a
realistic movie. Kind of like a Henry James story. Stewart is so
classy! Katherine Hepburn is ugly and beautiful at the same time. Hugh
Grant is also a class act. |
Witness, November 2007
 |
Happened to get this action movie set in
Amishland right after seeing the Amish! Annoying 80's music |
Wall Street, November 2007
 |
Typical 80's movie about a kid who
matures. |
Requiem for a Dream, November 2007
 |
Very disturbing and haunting movie about some
ugly realities of life and the power of addiction to drugs, TV, medical
pills, food, and sex. |
Bee Movie, November 2007
 |
Cute, stupid, occasionally funny. Ha ha. |
Beowulf, November 2007
 |
Animation is getting better and better.
Some characters look more real than others. Story-wise, the change
about the Jolie-monstress is very good. Action is very blurry
though. |
V for Vendetta, November 2007
 |
Matrix makers try again but not nearly as
good. Too unrealistic for one man to pull of a revolution and do
all those things... only one cool action scene with blood flying in slow
motion out of throats. |
Chaplin, November 2007 |
Interesting and education biography about
Charlie Chaplin. I never knew! |
Red Dragon, November 2007 |
Basically a remake of Silence of the Lambs...
exact same idea but new disturbing crimes and insanities.
Different detective. |
Oceans 13, November 2007 |
|
Hocus Pocus, November 2007 |
|
A Few Good Men, November 2007
 |
|
Munich, November 2007
 |
|
Transformers, November 2007 |
|
The Simpsons Movie, November 2007 |
|
Hannibal, November 2007
 |
Original in its unmatched gruesomeness but
after Silence of the Lambs, lacks in drama and acting power from
everyone but Hopkins. |
The Inside Man, November 2007
 |
|
The Simpsons, November 2007
 |
Stupid... much of it is same ol slapstick and
wimpy-offensive humor. But why when they turn it into a film they have
to put the requisite cheesiness: a love story... father & son...
community.... we're not looking to the Simpsons for that kind of
morality! We're looking for satirical morality. Even the Simpsons Jumped
on the green bandwagon. Funny moment: "Worst day of my
life...." Homer: "Yet!" |
Sicko, November 2007
 |
Eye Opening. Especially the part about
doctors getting bonuses for denying insurance company payment.
Sickening. However, the overly rosy picture of universal
healthcare in Europe is obviously too one-sided. Shows none of the
problems in socialized hospitals. From this perspective it's not a
factual documentary but opinionated propaganda. Even so, it may
convince me to vote for Hillary's Universal Healthcare in 08. |
Lion King, November 2007
 |
Watched again after all these years.
Opening sequence still gives shivers. Most of the rest seems to have
lost a lot of it's magic... lots of silly moments. |
Silence of the Lambs, November 2007
 |
|

Frenzy, Feb. 2007
 |
Disturbing serial rape-murder mystery movie,
but old-school special effects and drama style kinda take away from the
overall scariness by today's standards. Alfred Hitchcock's tie
murderer is an average friendly guy... that's scary. |
Brokeback Mountain, Feb. 2007
 |
A heartbreaking love story, with the
homosexual connotations it's even sadder. Stunningly beautiful
Montana backdrop and heartfelt yet simple music intensify emotion even
more. |
Moby Dick, Feb. 2007
 |
An honorable attempt at depicting the movie. |

Not as mesmerizing as the other qatsi's... too

motion picture, and a powerful commentary on society. |
